Rent your website or own it: the full breakdown
Many services "rent" you a website for a monthly fee. It sounds cheap at first β until you do the math. Let's do it together, no names mentioned: just numbers, ownership, and what happens when you stop paying.
The clear math: over 3 years, renting costs more and leaves you with nothing
Renting wins in month one because it asks for no upfront payment. But your business doesn't live for one month β it lives for years. Here's the full math with a real example from our pricing.
| Item | CafecitoWeb (owner) | Rented website |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront payment | $1,500 (example within $900β$2,500) | $0 |
| Monthly fee | $99/mo maintenance (optional) | $199/mo rent (mandatory; sample figure) |
| 12-month cost | $2,688 | $2,388 |
| 36-month cost | $5,064 | $7,164 |
| At the end of year 3 | The website is yours forever | You still owe $199 in month 37 |
Side-by-side, no names: it's not just the price
Without naming any company: what each model usually offers. Compare and decide with the full picture.
| Aspect | CafecitoWeb | Rented website |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Yours once the payment is complete, forever. Domain in your name. | Never yours. Cancel and you lose it. |
| Design | Custom-made, in Spanish, built for your trade and your area. | Depending on the provider: templates reused by many businesses. |
| Maintenance | Optional from $99/mo. Cancel anytime without losing your site. | Mandatory. Stop paying and your site disappears. |
| Support | One person, in Spanish, over WhatsApp and phone. | Depending on the plan: ticket support, sometimes a different person every time. |
| Delivery | 3β7 business days. | Depends on the provider. |
| Freedom | You can leave with your site, your domain, and your content. | Tied down while you pay; when you leave, you start from zero. |
The real hurdle isn't the total price: it's the upfront payment
Owning asks for an upfront payment ($900β$2,500 depending on site size). If you're just starting out, handing over all that money at once can feel harder than the total cost. So we split it: you don't pay less, you pay more comfortably.
Five questions to ask before signing with anyone
Ask these of any provider β us or anyone else. A serious one answers them straight.
1. Who owns the site and the domain?
There's only one right answer: you.
2. Is the price fixed or can it change?
Get it in writing, with a clear range.
3. What's the full first-year cost?
Design + monthly fees β not just the upfront part.
4. What happens if I want to leave?
You should be able to take your site, domain, and content with you.
5. Who helps me, and in what language?
Whoever designs your site should understand how your customers talk.
Frequently asked questions
Is the website mine from day one?
Once the total payment is complete, the site and the domain are 100% in your name. Until then we work in our own staging environment; at launch, everything is yours, with no perpetual rent.
Is $199 a month what rented websites cost?
Not necessarily: we use it as an example to do the math. What matters isn't the exact figure, but the model: as long as you pay monthly rent, the website is never yours.
Do I have to pay everything up front?
No. 50% to start, 25% when you approve the design, 25% before launch β no interest, no fine print. The price is fixed in writing before we start.
For a serious business, a website is an asset β not a rental.
