Website or just social media?

Many contractors get clients only from Instagram and Facebook. It works — until one day it stops working. Here's the difference nobody explains.

Owned land (your website) vs. rented land (social media)

Social media is rented land

Your Facebook page or Instagram isn't yours: it belongs to Meta. And that comes with three concrete risks most people discover when it's already too late:

1. The algorithm changes without warning. What works for you today may stop showing tomorrow. Your reach depends on decisions another company makes, not you: you can post for thousands of followers and only a small fraction will see it.

2. You can get suspended by mistake. It happens more than you think: a false report, an error in the automated system, and your page — with all your followers and your history — disappears overnight. Getting it back can take weeks. And meanwhile, zero new clients from that channel.

3. Organic reach is minimal. A business page's organic reach is a small fraction of your followers unless you pay. To be seen, you have to pay Meta. Every important post is a toll.

Website vs. social media, head to head

Your website is owned land

Your domain and your site are yours. Nobody changes the rules on you, nobody charges you to reach your own audience. And there's something even more important: they capture the customer at the exact moment they've already decided to hire. When someone searches "AC repair Doral" on Google, they're not browsing — they need the service today. That customer is gold, and social media doesn't capture them: there people are watching videos, not looking for a plumber.

Plus, your website works 24/7: nights, weekends, holidays. A customer finds you at 11 at night with a broken pipe, sees your professional page in English and Spanish, and calls you. On social media, at that hour your last post died days ago.

Two contractors, two realities

Think of it with two examples. Carlos only has Instagram: he posts his work, has a few hundred followers, and when the algorithm favors him, two or three people message him. When it doesn't, silence. His whole business depends on Meta's mood.

Miguel has a website and an optimized Google profile. When someone searches "electrician in Hialeah", he shows up. Those customers don't "follow" him: they call him. And his social media is still there, showing his work and reinforcing the trust of whoever already found him on Google. Miguel depends on no one.

So, is social media useless?

They do work — and well — for what they're good at: showing your work with photos and videos, building trust before they call you, and staying on the customer's mind between projects. The mistake is depending only on them. The winning combination for a contractor is:

  • Website + Google profile: they capture the customer who's searching and ready to call.
  • Social media: it shows your work and keeps you visible between projects.

The right order if you're starting from zero

First, your Google profile (free and fast): it's the first thing people who search for you see, and it puts you on the map — literally. Second, your professional website: your 24/7 salesperson, the one that turns searches into calls. Third, active social media that feeds your reputation with photos of real jobs. Each piece does its job, and none depends on the others to survive.

At CafecitoWeb we design websites for contractors in 3 to 7 days, starting at $900, built to turn visits into calls. See how we work.
